The Last Dog on Earth - Review and Blog Tour

Idgie Says:

I was so excited when this book showed up in my mailbox as the author's last book made my MUST read list of 2016 - and I only had 4 books on that list. So you can see that I had very high hopes for this one.

When I first received the book I was under the impression that it might be a bit of a carryover from Running Club as they were both about a dystopian future. I quickly learned this was not the case.   For one thing, this has a talking dog who's extremely foul-mouthed.

Now I realize you're thinking - "talking dog, sounds like a stupid book".  You couldn't be more wrong.

This novel is totally different than The End of the World Running Club but the characters are just as intense and grip you at the same level of emotion and investment. Adrian has a fabulous talent for building believable characters that draw you into their world.

The book is very well written and immediately drags you into the minds of Reginald, an agoraphobic electrician who cannot stand human touch.... and his dog, who is perfectly doglike but does a bang up job of explaining to us humans why dogs do what they do.

When war hits in the near future, Reginald feels he can simply hide in his home from the enemy patrols and wait it out with his dog - which he does for 3 years - until one day a small girl escapes a patrol and lands outside his door.  Against every single want in his body, he finds himself on a journey with her and his dog to get her out of the middle of the war zone.

An example of the writing.
Reginald slowly struggles to find himself and reconnect with society as he realizes he simply cannot complete this task on his own.  Meanwhile his dog finds himself in his own moral issues and life challenges.  Both maintain the goal of bringing the girl to safety... but at what cost?

The "Purple Soldiers" are very much characterizations of the Nazi Army, with their leaders being recognizable as some of today's government heads .

This book tops out near 400 pages and not for one second did I feel that there were parts that could be cut to create a more streamlined read.  I enjoyed every bit.

I highly recommend it.
